چکیده

Differential Power Analysis (DPA) by Paul Kocher et al. is expanded with the information that is hidden in the sign of power biases. The latter reveal values that collide with the DPA target value within the circuitry. With the help of cross-iteration comparisons, the interpretation of those values can provide significant amounts of the information required to reverse engineer secret algorithm. We have successfully launched a demonstration attack on a secret authentication and sessionkey generation algorithm implemented on SIM cards in GSM networks. The findings provide guidance for designing tamper resistant devices that are secure against this kind of attack.

Side-Channel Based Reverse Engineering of Secret Algorithms

Two techniques are introduced that enable sidechannel based reverse engineering of secret algorithms. The first is sign-extended differential power analysis (SDPA) while the second technique targets table lookups. The SDPA reveals values that collide with the DPA target value within the circuitry. The interpretation of those values can provide significant amounts of the information about the al...

A New Model for Analysis of Unusual Mal-Operation of Differential Protection Due to the Ultra-Saturation Phenomenon during the Loaded Power Transformer Energization

In this paper, a new model based on the thevenin equivalent circuit for investigating the ultra-saturation phenomenon during the energization of a loaded power transformer is presented and its effect on the differential protection of the transformer is considered. The ultra-saturation phenomenon causes the mal-operation of the power transformer differential protection. So, the description a...

Generalized Differential Quadrature Method for Vibration Analysis of Cantilever Trapezoidal FG Thick Plate

This paper presents a numerical solution for vibration analysis of a cantilever trapezoidal thick plate. The material of the plate is considered to be graded through the thickness from a metal surface to a ceramic one according to a power law function. Kinetic and strain energies are derived based on the Reissner-Mindlin theory for thick plates and using Hamilton's principle, the governing equa...

Power Differential based Wide Area Protection

Current differential based wide area protection (WAP) has recently been proposed as a technique to increase the reliability of protection systems. It increases system stability and can prevent large contingencies such as cascading outages and blackouts. This paper describes how power differential protection (PDP) can be used within a WAP and shows that the algorithm operates correctly for a...
